TikTok and Universal Music Group Form Alliance

TikTok users can access Universal Media Group full catalog worldwide, tapping into all of its iconic labels, songwriters and global territories and gaining a wealth of options for soundtracks to go with their video creations.

Meanwhile, UMG’s artists and songwriters will receive equitable compensation and see their music become a part of new, innovative experiences on TikTok.

TikTok and UMG expanded their existing agreement globally

We are excited to enter this new era with UMG and Universal Music Publishing Group to continue supporting artists and songwriters by working together to help reach music fans on TikTok. Our platform has been a driver in creating chart hits, and licensing the world’s biggest catalog of tracks will continue to inspire our community. In turn, we are proud to partner with UMG and UMPG to be a source to help new talent emerge and to reintroduce legacy acts to a new audience.

Ole Obermann – TikTok Music Head

TikTok and Universal Music Group (UMG) announced an extension of their partnership which will deepen the already active collaboration between the two allowing TikTok users to use songs from all UMG labels and artists in their videos. Users on TikTok will now get access to UMG’s full catalog and the two brands will continue to work together to bring new features and content.

UMG and TikTok will now work more closely than ever to promote ambitious experimentation, innovation and collaboration with the shared objective of developing new music experiences and features. Driving new and deeper connections with fans, this agreement delivers equitable compensation to our recording artists and songwriters, as well as a commitment to develop industry-leading tools, A&R (artists and repertoire) insights and models necessary to advance their careers.

Michael Nash – UMG Vice President

The viral aspect of TikTok gives UMG Group a Segway to millions of users who influence hit charts around the world. When a song (new or old) becomes popular on TikTok it translates to the music charts rankings and in turn builds revenue for the copyright owner.

This alliance sets an industrywide example of social media companies acknowledging, respecting and compensating the music creators whose songs are instrumental to their platforms. We appreciate TikTok’s partnership and look forward to working together to provide support and opportunities to our songwriters.

Marc Cimino – UMPG Chief Operating Officer

UMG and TikTok will now work more closely than ever to promote ambitious experimentation, innovation and collaboration with the shared objective of developing new music experiences and features.
