Amidst Boycott China: Government of India Makes Official TiKTok Account

While the Indian app users busy themselves trying to rid their phone of China-made apps and a certain ByteDance app, the Government of India has gone ahead and created an official TikTok account. MyGov India made a debut on short video creation platform and the account already has over 6.5 million likes.

Amid the YouTube vs TikTok fight, the local for vocal campaign and sharp demand to boycott Chinese products from support groups, the Government of India has made a TikTok account officially.

With the description of Citizen engagement platform of Government of India, MyGov India is all set to take over TikTok. The account is all about yoga practices and coronavirus awareness campaign featuring with celebrity videos. The official account looks like as:

The account has 6.4 million likes

The account uploaded yoga and coronavirus awareness related videos.

The step comes in light of PM Modi urging Indians to become Aatmanirbhar and use only Indian products. In some cases, even taking imported products off the shelf. Given the PM’s love for yoga and the government’s bid to make Arogya Setu mandatory, most of the account’s videos don’t come as a surprise. He even had Yoga With Modi video series on YouTube. But, what does come as a surprise to netizens is the fact the government has joined TikTok amidst the bid to Boycott China. Now, hashtags like #BoycottChinaProducts have been trending on Twitter for a while.

Anti-China sentiments have been on the rise during the coronavirus pandemic. Just recently, Mitron, a TikTok rival app was launched and then removed from the Google Play Store soon after over policy violations. The chief function of the app that garnered 5 million downloads seemed to be spamming users on the Play Store. As if that wasn’t enough, Remove China Apps, another app that did exactly what the name suggests hit 5 million downloads, becoming a hot favorite of Indian app users who thought deleting China-made apps from their phones would somehow have a negative economic impact on China. The app was also dropped from the Play Store over policy violations but Indians wanted it back.

MyGov India has sparked outrage among those inspired by the call for Atmanirbhar Bharat mentioned in the Prime Minister’s speech. And the irony of having the Government of India on TikTok is not lost on Twitterati.

Waiting for this to trend on Twitter so that someone makes a YouTube video about it and the answer is on TikTok again.
